In the Stars January 18-25, 2015…shining light on the astrology of the week: New Moon in Capricorn, Mercury Retrograde

As you readers know, my mother died January 8. I just returned from her beautiful funeral and burial on Friday (Venus’ Day), January 16. There seem to be many crossings at this time, as I know of at least four other deaths of close family members of friends, and both long-time neighbors on either side of our home in the past month. In addition to the memorial celebration for my mother, we close family members did a complete clean-up of all of her material possessions and matters. Death calls forth rebirth, symbolized by Pluto—and we are getting an extra boost of new, creative inventive energy with Uranus squaring Pluto. In the cycle of death and rebirth, there’s a call for renewal and regeneration after death. With the complete dissolution of my mother’s life, my own life feels primed for rebirth. The New Moon in Aquarius on Tuesday, and the many amazing, active, exuberant aspects this week invite all of us to re-think and re-vitalize our lives, to shoot for the stars, and to take bold steps to manifest our dreams and visions. Join me there!

This is one amazing week ahead packed with inventive genius, vision, possibility and opportunity. Embrace the ways you want to change your life and the world and seize the abundant opportunities that the cosmos delivers this week.

A Capricorn Moon on Sunday brought us down to the practical matters of the work before us.  Take some time to consider how you will use the very powerful planetary aspects of Monday and the Aquarius New Moon Tuesday. What new steps in your life are you ready to take?

A double rainbow symbolizes this powerful Monday that holds beauty, magic, and divine possibility. It is blessed with an exact Venus-Jupiter opposition, an aspect of exuberant optimism, creativity, and joy. The only downside of this pleasant combination is a tendency toward extravagance and exaggeration. However, this is tempered by the practical cardinal Earth Capricorn Moon that highlights the Uranus-Pluto square. Another powerful aspect on Monday is Mars-conjunct-Neptune which can deliver creative inspiration and clear vision. The Moon is dark, heralding a New Moon Tuesday, calling for dream incubation. This is a day to reach for the stars. Be inspired, create magic, and make plans for how you will deliver your big dreams after the New Moon.

Tuesday continues the high, free-spirited planetary energy as the Sun moves into the sign of Aquarius tropically, and shortly after joins the Moon. This New Moon calls for something new in the realms of this freedom sign of the zodiac that symbolizes individuality, friendship, and community. The Sun and Moon in Aquarius join Mercury and Venus there, amplifying the intelligent, intuitive, and scientific energy of this fixed Air sign. Saturn sextiles the Moon, making it possible to manifest unique, intelligent ideas. Wherever this New Moon highlights our horoscopes is where we are blessed with genius (0:08 Aquarius). Ask yourself what you can do to change the world—and get moving on that hope or idea! Aquarius symbolizes humanitarian concerns and social causes. The Sabian symbol for this New Moon (for 1 degree Aquarius) is “An old adobe mission in California; the power inherent in all great human works to endure far beyond the workers’ life span.” This symbol calls each of us to affirm our dream for the world. What IS your dream for the world? Another powerful aspect in this New Moon is Uranus exactly conjunct the South Node (and square Pluto), marking a dynamic time of revolutionary change. Stephanie Austin wrote in The Mountain Astrologer (December/January 2015), “this particular alignment of Uranus, the South Node and Pluto in Aries and Capricorn has not happened in more than 2,600 years. The rarity of this configuration suggests that this year could be one of the most pivotal times in human history.”

Wednesday Mercury goes retrograde until February 11. The planet of communication is in Aquarius from January 4 through March 12, twice its usual time, due to its retrograde and then direct motion. This gives a lot of time for brilliant ideas to burst forth. The Mercury retrograde period is one for re-viewing, re-thinking, revising, and renovating. Wednesday is another one packed with goodies: Moon sextile Uranus; Moon conjunct Mercury and Venus; and Moon opposite Jupiter. This day is full of pleasure, creativity, vision, and opportunity. It’s the third day in a row this week packed with amazing possibilities, so make the most of the promising cosmic energy.

Thursday and Friday the Moon is in dreamy, artistic, inspiring Pisces. Thursday the Moon joins Mars and Neptune, amplifying hope and delivering divine inspiration. The Sun makes an opportunistic sextile with Saturn, enabling us to ground and manifest dreams. Friday’s only aspect is the Moon-sextile-Pluto, giving additional power to resource inspiring possibilities.

A new lunar cycle begins Saturday morning as the Moon moves into fiery, action-oriented Aries. Flowing aspects to the Sun and Saturn supports productivity as the result of fast-forward movement. It’s an invigorating day! Make things happen!

Sunday is the turbulent day of the week when the cardinal Moon shines its light on the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square. The day is pregnant with possibility for anything new and adventurous. A Jupiter trine to the Moon amplifies positive possibilities and crowns this day with fun and exuberance—a perfect aspect to end this awesome week packed with invention, opportunity and possibility.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet and before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it’s difficult to make decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. You will more easily get lost or meander if you’re trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.

One Response to In the Stars January 18-25, 2015…shining light on the astrology of the week: New Moon in Capricorn, Mercury Retrograde

  1. I don’t understand the significance of the South Node in either of the respects you mention in your rundown of the week. I think of the North Node as more “positive” than the South one, but this may be because most astrologers have always talked about the South Node as referring to past experience, whereas the North is referring to the future.

I have the South Node conjunct my natal Moon in Aquarius, with a bunch of asteroids conjunct this configuration. But astrologers I’ve consulted over the years have talked as if I “should” be focusing on moving toward where the North Node “shows” in my chart and in transits rather than “retreating” to what my South Node symbolizes. So I wonder why/how the South Node is something to look forward to, as I’ve noticed in your write-up here as well as in some others that I’ve read in the last week.
