In the Stars May 10-17, 2015…shining light on the astrology of the week

Mercury is in its shadow, moving toward its next retrograde period, beginning May 18. Use this week to wrap up contracts and agreements, and get things communicated and printed before the 18th. The three-week retrograde period between May 18 and June 12 is a period to pause and re-think things, re-organize, and to work down the Inbox and remnants of lists undone rather than starting new things. So use this week before the retrograde period toward actualizing what you anticipate to be important between now and mid-June.

However, it won’t be easy: There are three full days this week with the Moon Void-of-Course. The VoC moon basically lasts all day on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (though Wednesday there’s a small, productive window early morning until 9:55 AM). The Moon is VoC when it makes its last aspect (Ptolemaic-conjunction, opposition, square, trine or sextile) with a planet before it moves into the next sign. When the Moon is void, it is not connecting with another planetary body—the energy is free floating. It shows up in our lives as things not connecting or coming together. Decisions made during void Moons are often later regretted as our thinking just isn’t clear. So while this is a week for bringing contracts and agreements toward closure, these three VoC Moon days aren’t good ones for doing that. Use those days for tackling your email backlog, or for reading and reviewing to position yourself to surge on the alternate days, unburdened. Plan to make the most of Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for getting things done that call for decisions and connections.

This week begins with the Moon in Aquarius Sunday and Monday. Aquarius is the zodiacal sign that is associated with the 11th house–friendships, groups, organizations, material gains, and hopes and aspirations. I just attended an excellent webinar taught by Demetra George about the mythology, symbolism, workings and promises of the astrology of the 11th house. It’s interesting to think that the 11th house symbolizes both friendships and riches, or gains. With the Moon in Aquarius both Monday and Tuesday, let’s pause and think about our friendships. Do our friends lift us up or create or invite trouble? Let’s honor the friends who inspire and benefit us. How could we benefit by cultivating friendships—or by pruning some?

Sunday, Mother’s Day, calls for new forms of fun and group gatherings with friends. You may want to celebrate Mother’s Day with friends and your tribal family. It’s a day for conversation and widening perspectives.

Monday is also colored by the Moon in Aquarius, which makes a last-quarter square with the Sun and also squares Mars—rattling us out of our comfort zones…perhaps stirring up a bit of chaos. The Moon is VoC all day, so don’t expect things to take form; and steer clear of activities calling for decisions. Spend time with friends and enjoy the surprises that emerge from the meanderings of this day.

Late Monday evening (Tuesday morning GMT) Mars moves into Gemini tropically, where it will stir up curiosity and activity in this sign through June 25. Dabble in new explorations over the next six weeks.

The Moon is in Pisces on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday is an inspiring, soft, imaginative day. A Moon-Pluto sextile in the evening can bring focus and ambitious resolve. The inspiration continues on Wednesday, but with the Moon VoC all day after 9:55 AM Pacific time, don’t expect a lot to be accomplished, unless it’s painting a picture, watching a movie, or dancing!

In great contrast to Wednesday’s soft, meandering (or perhaps “spacy”) energy, Thursday is a very dynamic, potent day. A new lunar cycle begins with the Moon in fiery hot Aries. Bolt out the door early and do some vigorous exercise, and then give your task list the works. Mars and Saturn are in opposition, and this aspect can feel restraining, demanding, and challenging. However, with focus this aspect can result in getting a lot accomplished carefully, diligently, and masterfully.

Early Friday morning the Moon joins Uranus—which could deliver something shocking or surprising. The rest of the day the Moon is Void. Take a hike, or clean your office. Do something adventurous. Don’t waste your time on meetings or shopping or anything calling for a clear decision.

Saturday and Sunday hold the exalted Moon in Taurus. There’s a New Moon late Sunday at 26:55 Taurus, so these weekend days the Moon is dark, a time for bringing projects to closure and drawing inward. The exalted Taurus Moon is about all things sweet and sensual. So make sure your weekend is pleasurable and is graced with plenty of good food, wine, and music. Mercury is making a station ready to go retrograde on Monday, another reason to use this weekend for closure in preparation for a new cycle, heralded by the New Moon late Sunday night (9:13 PM PDT) or early Monday morning (12:13 AM EDT).

The Week in Short:
Sunday: Mother’s Day—celebrate it with a wide circle of friends and family.
Monday: Moon VoC all day. Meetings will meander, so re-schedule them for Tuesday or Thursday. Spend time with friends.
Tuesday: Inspiring, imaginative day.
Wednesday: Another Moon VoC day—all day after 9:55 PDT! Paint, dance, or create.
Thursday: Productive day if focused. Bolt out the door early for vigorous exercise, then give your day the works!
Friday: Open to surprises and be adventurous! Moon VoC all day!
Saturday: Bring projects to closure. Exalted Moon in Taurus calls for all things pleasurable.
Sunday: Practical day to get work done. Enjoy good food. New Moon in Taurus at 9:13 PM PDT.

Moon Void-of-Course: This is the time when the Moon makes its last major angular aspect with a planet and before it moves into the next zodiacal sign tropically. This void time, when the Moon is not aspecting a planet, but rather floating on its own, is a time when things don’t come together and it’s difficult to make decisions. Purchases made during void Moons often turn out to be unsatisfactory and not work out. Appointments often don’t come together and meetings don’t result in progress or sound, lasting decisions. You will more easily get lost or meander if you’re trying to get somewhere. The VoC Moon times for the next month are listed below so that you can plan meetings, decisions, and purchases at times when the Moon is not VoC; and use the void times for gardening, reading, and routine task work.

  1. am says:

Why do you write: Monday Moon VoC all day. Meetings will meander …? According to this post, Moon is VOC on Monday, May 11, only from 3:36-7:53 PM. (Some 3 hours couldn’t be called “all day.”)

    • Cathy Coleman says:

Thanks for letting me know this error–the Moon goes void at 3:36 AM Monday–through 7:53 PM.
